I just picked up a master off trademe. It said in the auction it works sometimes, but I'm not convinced as it works never for me. I think the keyboard encoder is shot, anyone got a spare? It's an MSI Keyboard Encoder (CF30047)

Matt,

I don't have a spare BBC Master, but just to clarify, do you want the chip just for diagnostic testing (to then be returned to the donor) or are you looking for it as a donation/sale/swap item? Also, does this chip only occur on the BBC master or can it be found on the standard BBC (b) and other machines (Acorn etc.).

I'm looking for sale or swap. I have a bunch of Master Compacts spare here and none of them have the keyboard encoder. And I've just checked online, and the BBC B's appear to use the VIAs, which I assume must be what's happening on the Compacts.

If I unplug the keyboard and turn it on, it starts, then i can plug in and type a few things before it starts printing too many characters then hangs. I've tried other keyboards and resoldering bits to no avail. I think it's the encoder.

And I was about to say, you can have my Master Compact 'cause I'm missing the PSU/Floppy unit for it. Suck that it won't help you :(
