Nice looking unit. And complete with a handy drive cleaning kit.

I'm surprised by his battery question - unless you were expecting/concerned about an RTC card that was installed. XT's don't have CMOS.

Judging by the pink DOS book, and full sized HDD plate - I'm expecting it's a 256Kb model with an ST412 hard drive. Although that's just educated guesswork - can't be sure until you open it. I'd also expect when plugged in, the mains filters will blow, and quite possible that a few tantium caps will need to be removed.

I'm considering it because of it's nice case, but postage could be ouch. Also there is the Compaq Portable Plus (1983) and Compaq Portable II floating about. I see the IBM 5140 actually met reserve ($205ish). Unrelated, but I just got a Sega Master System for two bucks, so I should go play with that :P

The keyboard that comes with it may not be XT compatible either and certainly need the make/model no. of that too. If the PO had done some mods there may well be an expansion card card with RTC and barrel battery.Without seeing the inards it's only guess work though. No dought it'll go to a good home.

My IBM Dos 4.01 set looks very similar the package in the auction.

Yeah there could be, not confident that's why he asked though. Not that it matters, I was just surprised.

Interesting about DOS 4.01. I thought after version 3 they changed design like this: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/featur ... g?page=0,5

Do you have a photo?
I have the pink book, but it's PC DOS 2.11.

I'm glad I started to collect again when I did.

$455 for an untested machine.
It does look tidy (nicer than mine), but that's a fair bit of money for an unknown situation.
