You really gotta wonder

Postby Clym5 on Thu Jan 08, 2015 8:09 pm

I'm not sure if this has come up before, but this auction... http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/vint ... 717581.htm

It's a generic Pentium PC running Windows 98. I have issues with having too many of these, as most people don't think they're collectible items like a C64 or ZX Spectrum and just give them to me. Who would think a PC that probably cost $1000 back then (incl. accessories) is still worth the same? I mean, a C64 cost, what, $400 USD in 1985 ($850 USD now) and you see them on TradeMe for $1 to $200.

Argh, it irritates me more than it should! Has anyone here manage to successfully bargain with one of these people?

Yes that has been relisted many, many times :? Off topic but if anyone wants a P1 machine my uncles work has a bunch in storage (not being used) I may be able to donate some some before they go to the tip :D (they have lots of serial cables ect, I even found a PS2 to DIN adapter going to ask if I can fill up the back of my Dad's car with one man's junk)

EDIT: Just read the Q&A, go ahead read it :D it looks like he's going a bit blind

Should offer $20 :D probably, not a great idea in hindsight, I will get blacklisted from the auction on my parents TM account :/

Yes. People are free to set whatever price they like but I wonder who he has been taking to?

I don't expect to see a sale anytime soon.

Yeah, I saw the comment. Tempted to kindly say it isn't worth that much, and sorry or something. But like you, I use my parent's trademe account! I really should get my own.
I quite like the saying "It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it."

I can't comprehend anyone thinking it's worth more than $200 tops. I just can't make my mind go there. But, if he's happy with thinking it's worth as much as a brand new high-performance PC, then that's fine by me. Just irks me!

I'm not overly interested in the actual P1 machines, but parts are always handy, like PCI, RAM, CPU card and other bits. If you can give me a vague description of what's in them, I'd be interested in some bits! PM me I guess.

I have a pile of Dell optiplex's that I'm sure his "experts" might like.

Oh man, I found it hard to believe that the person actually thought it was worth that much, but I guess its true. Someone offered them $19 and they came back with "Do your parents know you are using their computer to ask stupid questions?"

I think the 'expert' might be having the guy on. Surely looking at the rest of the vintage section would show how odd it is.

In the end, I guess its up to him to decide what he feels its worth - I see it now has a Buy Now of $599.99... Maybe it'll see this time around at that price?

Argh, it irritates me more than it should!

Yup, Trademe can be a bit like that sometimes.
