"Legacy VGA (Video Graphics Array) and DVI (digital-visual interface) display ports will likely no longer be used in PCs over the next five years as newer interfaces gain in popularity, NPD In-Stat said in a study released on Thursday."

It's been hard enough moving from RF -> Composite -> 15khz RGB -> VGA. It's only going to get harder :(

Tis true. My current setup uses HDMI - more for convenience than anything else. But phasing out the old styles was inevitable really...

Yes, inevitable I guess. Still, VGA has had a good run. Twenty five years is pretty good as far as computer standards are concerned.

I'm seeing more and more DisplayPort out there for PC apps - HP have had it in their business PCs for a while, but I'm starting to actually use it now. Still a little confusion in the monitor space though - the old LE2201w CFL backlit LCD had VGA only, while it's LED backlit replacement the LE2202x comes with VGA and DVI, no DP. It's the same range as the HP Compaq 6200 Pro but doesn't match it for connectivity!

Then there's the little things with modern displays that give you the right gutsache. We built a setup for a chap who wanted to run Trainz REALLY GOOD. It ended up having a Viewsonic VX2453mh-LED display with a Radeon 6870, all very nice modern kit. The monitor so flash that it had HDMI only. But, when coupled to the Radeon, the graphics card was enabling some form of option which caused the display to downscale and not fill the display. We tried every setting that the Catalyst drivers could give us but to no avail. We ended up sending the flash VX2453 back in favour of the VA2448-LED - a ViewSonic Value series monitor with VGA and DVI. Hooked it up with DVI and bam, perfect image at 1920x1080.

Just goes to show you that even with the latest gear, it's not always a winner. At least with VGA and the later DVI standard, it just works and it does so reliably.
