AT to ATX conversion

by Clym5 » Fri Jan 02, 2015 12:47 am

I've been looking at finding a really vintage-looking PC case to build my main computer into, but all the ATX cases (1995+) don't quite have that look. AT cases, however, do. What I was wondering, is will an ATX motherboard fit in a AT case? Screw mounts, etc. Or will I need to modify the AT case to fit it?

And if anyone has a old PC case, or one with the guts in it, that looks pretty retro, and you don't want it, PM me!

ATX motherboards have a backplane with ports etc, AT cases do not. You'd also want to be using an ATX supply for it's 3.3V etc.
There have been people who have done it in the past, but a fair bit of metalwork (or woodwork in one case) would be needed.

Ah, I see. Thanks very much! I don't own a AT case, hence the question. I guess I'll keep my eye out for a retro looking ATX case.

Have a look at my retrofitting thread if you want some inspiration.

ATX into an AT case would mean a maximum of a Micro-ATX board. It can be done, it's a lot of metalwork though. If you were really, REALLY interested I could be persuaded to make one with one of the old Macase beige babyAT towers I have spare on commission.
