For me, "Historian" with a dab of "Finisher"

The only hoarding I do is rare parts, and if forced to part with them or if someone else needed them I wouldn't have trouble letting them go.

Lol! It's always good to revisit these old threads.

Since I posted that first note, I've become far more experienced at repairing machines and I think my order has changed.

I'd now rank myself Historian and Repairer. Maybe finisher if you regard my own personal "wanted" list, but not as far as any particular model goes. I've decided I'm not a hoarder. I do hang on to double ups for spare parts but unless it's on my list or is a really vintage machine (as in 1985 backwards) that falls into my lap for free, I have no problem passing it by.

But still hold on to my Spectrum, and literally everything that I collected with it from Magz to Software (god knows how many of those tapes actually still work, but I can't throw them out). Its been stored in boxes in all kinds of environments. A lot of damp ones at that so no idea if it still works. I even have the old Sharp cassette deck (I dunno how many people recall those large chunky decks that most schools had, with the wood-grain top on them) that was my other main "peripheral". Given all this gear has never really been outside of storage for almost 2 decades and that I've held on to it - Yep, definitely a hoarder. :)

Given that you specialise just on Sinclair perhaps a bit of Finisher in there as well Kev? :)

Repairer
even back when I had my first Atari 8 bit I spent more time doing mods to it than using it to play games, Always did get more fun out of stripping things down see how they work and getting them to work better. This was back them when we called some one a hacker, we it meant some one who played with the hardware to mod it or repair it.

Back in 1986/7 I meet a guy who bought out the UK Atari Workshop, so ended up with heaps of cheap 1050 drives to repair and a large number of 800xls and 130 XEs, took these with me when I went to South Africa on contract and then brought them here , still had some to repair, and have been buying the odd Atari as and when I have seen them come up for sale over the years, and until about 9 months ago had never collected anything other than Atari, in the last 12 months I have added C= etc to the list getting plenty of faulty C64's but finding some of the chips hard to get

mm.. hoarder/finisher with ambitions of repairer, but I lack the time at the moment.

I certainly struggle to let parts go, especially to the trash... and I like having them ALL.. :)

lol! Yeh, actually you're probably right - given how much stuff there is, its probably a much better description. (though I never throw anything away "just in case" so I am definitely a hoarder as well (not just of the Sinclair stuff  )

20% finisher
30% repairer
50% historian
100% daft as a brush :D

In my opinion a hoarder and caretaker with a bit of historian thrown in. My wifes' opinion is that I'm junk collector, not that I listen to her that much. A bit deaf you see

Don't worry - I think that "wife deafness" is a common affliction when it comes to old gear.

Repairer & Personal Use.

Every machine in the collection runs - and if something doesn't work, I *have* to fix it.

On the user side of things, I'm a retro gamer and game developer - so they give me huge amounts of inspiration and enjoyment.

Yes I have this ailment too. It annoys the hell out of me if something doesn't work! :)

I have slipped into a bit too much Hoarder and not enough Repairer lately. Still a strong Historian and Personal Use colelctor though :)

Like Kev I have a pretty strong Finisher streak when it comes to Sinclair as well. Anyone have a MK14 going cheap?
