Shipping heavy equipment around the country

Postby nama on Thu Sep 17, 2015 4:00 pm

Maybe this subject has been discussed before, but no harm in asking.

I'm trying to find an economical, safe, and insured way to ship a heavy Heathkit terminal from Auckland to Christchurch.
As the terminal is both old and also contains a CRT, great care will be taken in boxing it, but you never know what kind of abuse it may receive in transit, hence the need for insurance.

The size of the box will probably be about 50x60x60cm

Anyway, just wondering what company you guys use when shipping stuff like this.

Thank for your time

Philip

Pricing of freight is probably likely to depend on the weight. The dimensions don't seem to be overly big so generally most carriers should accept.

I have previously had items shipped to me by 'pass the parcel' and that worked out alright. Last time I got 50kg of Amiga stuff back from Christchurch to Auckland by purchasing an extra bag for $30 - did help that it was a business trip though!

Then again some couriers eyes must light up when they see "fragile" plastered on a box - I always worry about PBT (Please Break This) Couriers! Apparently you can now purchase G-Force stickers to put in packaging and see how much abuse they get subjected too.

Just a matter of trying a few websites - with the dimensions and weight you should be able to get some reasonable quotes.

Cheers.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out 'pass the parcel'.
And yes, you are right, I should find out the weight before I can get an accurate quote from anyone.

Thanks

Philip

EDIT: Just looked into 'pass the parcel'...seems that don't do large packages. Oh well. Thanks anyway.

About a year ago I needed to ship about 250kg of vintage test equipment from Wellington to CHCH.

I purchased a heavy duty cardboard pellet box from http://doubleEco.co.nz for just under $100.

They were great to deal with and since they were close to the shipper, they delivered it there at no charge.

The shipper loaded all the equipment into the cardboard box.

I then contacted http://www.wefreight.co.nz/ who arranged to collect the pallet (I think Mainfreight picked it up) and I sent them $190 via internet banking. A few days later they rang to let me know the pallet was ready for collection from their warehouse. I got them to forklift it into the back of my truck, I took it home and carefully unpacked it all in the back of the truck and there was zero transit damage. Woot!

Thanks for the info Andy. This is good to know.
In the end I was able to bring it back in the plane on one of my recent trips to Auckland. It did cost an extra $60 for being overweight/oversized.
