Any museum collectors of note in CHCH?

I'm up there this weekend and was wondering if anyone was open with their collections for visiting and conversation?

This will be my first ever visit to CHCH where it's not specifically for some family/rellies occasion and I'm at a loss for what I'll be doing except for visiting another friend.

Not really interested in the earthquake damage tour, but I guess it'll be inevitable as I fumble my way around.

hi, I am a newer member to the forum and don't log on very often.
Terry dropped me an email to see if I had seen your posting, so have just done that.
I am happy to catch up over the weekend, in fact I am still moving my collection out of my storage room and into a lock up facility round the road as my collection got a real hiding from the quake ans has taken a lot of sorting out.
This has given me the chance to have a look at just what I have collected as much of it has just got buried.
Drop me an email john@ccarchitects.co.nz or ring 0274343227.

cheers
john

Hi John,

thanks for the message. I'll send you an email (not too long, 2 finger typing this hour on a wee Vaio).

Thanks to Terry also.

I imagine many people lost many things in the quake, which is why so much of what some us collectors have should be in a couple of computer museums. Funded museums are exactly the type of buildings strengthened and built to code to stand such events.

I shudder to think what will get lost if my place ever burns down or gets ransacked (dodgy Dunedin neighbourhood).

I hope you didn't lose too much of your collection. My last phone call a year or so back to the insurance company was a struggle to communicate that vintage computers had a collectible value and they can't just apply their computer depreciation schedules to them. Thus my collection is not insured above my normal contents policy.

This brings up a good question; what are others doing to insure their collections? What are others doing to value their collections?

Indeed.

I haven't specifically taken out insurance on mine but I know I should. Collectively, there is a bit of value there and I'm not sure that general contents insurance will cover it. I had thought about making a list of what I expect the replacement value to be, then trying my own insurance company (or others) to see if they will cover the collection as a special lot (at a reasonable premium), based on the replacement value I give them.

I should really get my arse into gear and do this...
