Most "typical" Windows 95 configuration?

I'm picking a 486-DX-66 clone, soundblaster 16, with 16MB, CD-ROM, 1.2MB and 1.44MB drive. Would you consider this a very typical Windows 95 configuration? Not maxed out but not straining to be useable either? This is what my first Windows 95 machine looked like. I want to add what would have been a "typical" Windows 95 Intel configuration to my machine collection for demo purposes.

Typical configuration for Windows 95 to be fair would be a Pentium based system. It survived from original release on 486s and really early Pentiums through to OSR 2.5 on Pentium IIs, so a mid-spec Pentium-class would be the more normal strain. Something in the ~100MHz range is the most common find personally.

I would have thought a 486 would have had maybe Windows 3.1 on it , I seem to remember IBM's withj Pentium 90's coming out with 3.1

Yeah Windows 95 was more Pentium generation, everyone with a 486 I knew had 3.1 installed (not to say that people didn't upgrade to 95).

My IBM P75 was 3.1/OS/2. I remember the pre-built machines usually being P90-P133's at first that shipped with 95.

Hmm..interesting. Thanks for that feedback. In a way that makes it easier for me in that I don't have a 4860DX-66 board anyway but I DO have a Pentium 1 and a Pentium MMX machine lying around (both have Win 98 at present). Perhaps I'll use one of those.

I'd tend to agree that Win 95 was more Pentium than 486, the first Win 95 PC my department had was a PC Direct Pentium 90. That said, I also saw it sold with Intel and AMD 486 4-100 CPU systems, but those were aimed at home users.

Yeah DX4s with 95 wasn't unusual early in the piece, but that phase passed reasonably quickly as Pentium technology came down in price. 95 and Pentiums were like peas and carrots, it's not a coincidence that 95 OSR2.5's USB support turned up right about when the Intel Triton II chipsets gained USB support :)

By the time the Pentium II/Celeron family started to phase in, Windows 98 showed up.

Of course such incredulous timing didn't last whatsoever... the current generation hardware refreshes faster than the operating systems by a good deal. Oh for the simpler times...
