Storage Boxes

Postby Gibsaw on Mon May 21, 2012 6:51 pm

I'm trying to make a decision on storage boxes and having some difficulty. I'm leaning towards the 35L "under bed" variety, but either they seem to be marginally too small, or have non-useful (external) advertised dimensions, compounded by a slightly rounded shape.

I'm after something that is :-

  • reasonably airtight. The moisture situation is not ideal where I live (old house.) and fixing "where I live" is next year's agenda. My temporary solution will involve plastic boxes and silica-gel.
  • reasonably square, uniform and stackable, while containing computers, so they'll need to be reasonably strong. (not the absolute cheapest and meanest)
  • able to contain an Apple II Series computer so a storage dimension of at least 12cm High x 39cm Wide x 47cm Long. Preferably long enough to contain a pair of "Disk II" drives (16cm Wide x 22cm Long x 11cm High) and some power cords as well.
  • a series of them that might be a standard stock item for more than one order... i.e. When I go back to buy another one in six months or a year, I can still get the same one, and they still stack uniformly.

These looked good until I discovered that the advertised dimensions were "external dimensions" (and even then slightly overestimated), rather than the storage size.

These look possible, but 60L seems large, and I suspect the warehouse doesn't order the same of anything more than once.

Has anyone got any recommendations?

check them out in store as they had some specials on the boxes , and I found they sealed better than the Watrehouse ones

I have four of these and am pleased with them. They are a replacement for the older style under bed organisers the The Warehouse carried for several years, but I'm pretty sure they're the same brand. It looks like the manufacturer changed the desgn. I have not tested whether these stack with the older ones. Smallest internal dimensions are 650 x 480 x 170mm. They stack well - I've stacked 4 but 6 or so would probably be quite stable. They seem quite capable of taking the weight.[/quote]

I have quite a few of the Warehouse versions of this style storage container, and I find that the flat "under bed" style are much more practical for computer storage.

OK, it looks like Perroplas still make the old style 60L under bed organisers in the photo (http://www.perroplas.co.nz/links/2012_P ... t_cat1.pdf)

They should still be available: http://www.perroplas.co.nz/stockists.html

Yeah, that's what I had in mind. Something that's a stock item and is likely to be still made next year.

Perroplas are pretty good like that. (I've got about 6 of one style of their washing baskets that I bought over about 10 years.)

I've chucked a pile of things into Warehouse 60l storage bins - usually they come on sale often, so I'll buy a couple each time. That said, most of what I have is sitting in a drafty damp "under the house" area still in cardboard boxes. Luckily most of these are off the ground. I lost a small handful of old magazines (Big K, for anybody who remembers that one) when I left a box on the ground and the moisture hit it - making them a mouldy mush. :(

Talking mould, if you need Silica gel then there's this site: http://silicagelproducts.co.nz/

I've just ordered a 10 pack of 25g sachets to chuck in the boxes I have already (most have a sachet or two I found from a shoe box or other item, but I figured some fresh ones may be a good idea)

Stickin' with the Perroplas under the bed style like the ones in lizardboy's photo. They hold an Apple II and two disk II drives with ample room to spare for cords, disks, manuals, silica-gel etc... I have 6 now and in theory can get more exactly the same in a years time.

Call me fussy, but I like them to all look and (more importantly) stack the same. :D

The under-bed style are definitely my recommendation. They fit most computers well with room for some peripherals etc and they stack well. It can be a bit of a pain if you want something from the bottom box though!
