FOX-2001

Postby YetiSeti on Tue Feb 02, 2010 5:18 pm

I'm not going to say any more to see if you know what I'm talking about.

Oh okay will - old wide-ish rectangular box computer case, plastic. Top of case lifts up, no screws. Twin floppy drives on front, no name badge, but on side is a stuck on plastic picture of a fox head.

Turn on and it just says at top "FOX-2001" and tries to boot from a floppy.

On back, RS-232, cga, RCA video, cassette in & out. Nothing but hole for where DIN keyboard port might have been, but don't think anything on the board for it either.

Inside, a floppy controller card, titan ram card, Z80 card dated 1980, 64k 80 col card.

Sounds very much some home built Apple clone from kit? Time to look for some disks. But any info from anyone on this please?

okay, loads up my Apple games fine. Output to tv good. Input to computer not so good with no keyboard :(

Would the serial port be for the keyboard? Itching to play Lode Runner now.

Looks like a legit clone, as it has the same looking board by whoever did this one :

Interesting!

I don't know anything about it but going by the web link it's a smaller and different shaped board from your carbon-copy clone (which has EXACTLY the same layout as an Apple II+). I have several of the latter.

Looks like it's squeezed into a generic PC/XT case, yes? How about some pics of your unit?

CGA? Are you sure? Does this mean it can connect to a PC CGA/EGA monitor?

Thanks for the reply.

Here's some pics courtesy of my Nokia N95 (bit of a waste, only ever used it for a camera) :

Not sure if the port is CGA, but on the back there's a DB9 Male on the left side and DB9 Female on right side. Maybe the label on the side isn't original either.

Looks like on the board there hasn't been a keyboard and there are only the connectors for the "Numeric Keypad" (but no attached ribbon) just above where the Keyboard connector would have been. Would seem like a waste of an Apple if it didn't have a keyboard though. The serial port is cabled to the board, that's why I thought maybe that was for the keyboard.

Looks like no info on the net other than the link I trudged up, but still, another piece of almost forgotten history saved from scrap.

Good photos Clinton,

An interesting machine all round. There MUST be a keyboard connection there somewhere surely? Perhaps it was connected to some wierd serial keyboard as you suggest?

Hey fantastic effort for rescuing that peice of nostalgia! - Looking at those pics you put up reminds me of Old Faithfull - the first XT i got up and running.
Looking at the keyboard pic on the other website, it looks fairly simmilar to some i have in the collection i have as spares for the XT's - as this machine looks like it was built using off the shelf components, they may have somehow mannaged to couple up an XT keyboard but changed the plug as a form of vendor lock-in etc - just a thought. - Nice Pics too!
