after years abroad, i recently returned to NZ which meant i was able to fetch my old computers out of storage. i kept all the computers i owned up until the point where i jaunted off overseas, so that means a zx81, a spectrum, a c64, an amiga 500, amiga 2000 and amiga 1200 (the 1200 actually travelled with me). i'm pretty obsessed with retro gaming (mainly early 80s->early 90s) so i'd been looking forward to getting my hands on them again.

after excitedly setting up the zx81, speccy and c64 my heart sank as they are all suffering problems. 90% of the zx81's keyboard doesn't work, neither does the "o" key on the speccy (though, to be fair, i actually remember breaking it while playing Starstrike II), but it's the c64 that's bummed me out the most. i'm currently trying to decide whether it's worth attempting to fix it, or to just keep an eye out for any that go on sale.

i've posted on the Repair & Restoration board about the c64: http://www.classic-computers.org.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1046

cheers!

Hi,

You can buy new keyboards for the ZX81 and keyboard membrane's for the Spectrum from http://www.sellmyretro.com.

I have installed a few of the ZX81 keyboards and a QL membrane and have had no issue's at all with supply or quality.

ahh cool! i hadn't seen that site before - that's good to know.

i forgot i also have a spectrum+ and a spectrum 128K which a friend was getting rid of, though at the time i wasn't able to get them to do anything.. possibly power adapter related. i need to give them another try.

No worries,

For Sinclair specific help and the odd program try here http://www.sinclairzxworld.com/index.php. It is also run by Rich who runs the sellmyretro site.

Also keep an eye out for a dos program call zx_p2wav which converts .p (zx81) and .o (zx80) files into wav files so you can load them via your PC or convert them to mp3 etc. There are also versions to convert zx spectrum .tap and .tzx around.

Welcome :) Good to see another Wellington user about.

I have the Amiga 2000 and C64 but mostly PC based.
My 1541 drives are being difficult as well, didn't get to them this weekend unfortunately :/

I'm glad your C64 is showing symptoms, and not just a black screen, should make it easier to work out.
