Terry:
Great website! I have a Compaq SLT 286 that I bought in the late 80's. At almost 15 lbs., it was cutting edge and considered sleek. I've kept it in a closet along with other laptops which have been retired. The last time I booted her up was after Y2k to see if it would still work--It did!! Tried to turn her on today and it would not reboot. Got an error message that said to insert the start up disc. I have no such thing and would not know where to find it. I use computers because I'm lazy. I'm hoping you can steer me in the right direction. Do you have any ideas?

Hi Terry,
its been a long time since I last contacted you and I can't remember my log in.
I am still collecting but am having a clean out of a few machines and looking to repair a few others.
I have an Apple Lisa 10/2 ( XP? ) which has a faulty power supply and am looking for someone who I could contact to have it fixed.
It is completely dead and keeps blowing fuses, so assume something is not right.
I have read of what to look for, but I am not suitably skilled to go repair it myself, so would welcome any recommendations who I could send it to.

many thanks
John

Hi Terry. WONDERFUL WORK with your retro computer YouTube videos. Your back history and computer showcase are easy to follow and detailed enough without being boring. PLEASE MAKE MORE!!!

Thanks. They take a bit of time to produce, and other things in my life are a priority for the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to do one or two more in 2016.

Hi Terry,
love your videos. The Spectrum bought for me by my mum & dad is now loading WAV files from a PC in my garage. I also did a composite video conversion. I have an Atari 600XL I expanded internally to 64K running SIO2PC connected to the same PC. ! Keep up the good work! Oliver

I miss your documentaries. smile

I am reading some older computer magazines and in the American BYTE 1/1984 I saw a report about the Zenith Z-100. Cannot tell whether that was available there, neither did I have one. But having 2 CPUs it seems to be a quite interesting computer.

In case you have no "new" computers in your collection and can get hold of a Zenith may be you can add this to your collection and make a video?

Thanks.

Interesting website.

Any Commodore 64 fans should check out my game, "Hangman's Hazard", which can be found at gamebase64.com, csdb.dk, and elsewhere.

If you like word games and are highly competitive, you might enjoy a game that was designed to be the best of the Hangman / Wheel of Fortune category.

Especially good with 3 or 4 players and can be played comfortably from across the room.

The dungeon scoring system is unique and was described as "admittedly the animation is nifty" in a review in Run magazine of Oct 1992.

Check it out.

Great website!

On behalf of all vintage computing enthusiasts, thanks for sharing all your toys and knowledge with the rest of us geeks who still remember these old machines. Your videos and website have satisfied my thirst for nostalgia.

Keep up the good work! Your dedication to the cause does honour to the spirit of computing I remember as a youth.

Hello Terry,

I recently discovered your web series. Nice. smile

I would like to note some things though. The volume is sometimes too low; you could speak little louder. Also that it would be nice to add some video clips of that time. Like ads or reports about the then new computer you are reviewing.

For the Sinclair QL you mentioned though it has multitasking. Correct, but it was also the first commercially available computer that had it, predating the Amiga by more than a year.

There is also a nice video I recommend from 1983 or so where a young Bill Gates talks about the MSX computers (did you ever make an episode of these?). And then a quite arrogant Clive Sinclair bitching about Gates and that Sinclair had the UK market on his grasp, with no chance Microsoft could get a larger share. Then he sais it gets even better, since the Sinclair QL was just around the corner. Well that didn't work. But nice witness of time. I could try to locate this video (runs about 20 minutes) if interested.

And for the Osborne. As far as I know they didn't go bust because others had similar devices but with larger screens. Rather than he announced the Executive too early, wasn't able to get it on the shelves, and people canceled Osborne 1 orders. It became to be known as the "Osborne Effect" <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_effect>

Thanks for those comments Andreas,

Yes, I'd be the first to admit the sound is bElow par on some of the videos. If I'd realised how popular they would be I would have paid more attention to it.

Yes, I have reviewed an MSX computer, the Spectravideo 728. Nice machine.

Re the Osborne effect. Yes there are lots of references to this. Not all agree to it's importance in the demise of the company though, with some people feeling that Osborne was in trouble anyway, simply being outclassed by Kaypro at the time.

Loved your Dick Smith System 80 pages. I had one back in the day, which I sadly fried after owning it a few months by using on a beanbag and blocking the ventilation holes. :( I didn't get a new 'puter until the Commodore Amiga came along, which was also impressive and affordable for its time, compared to the competition.

I'm a Microsoft-compatible man since the turn of the century, but old computers one owned have a special place in the geek heart - thanks for your voluminous efforts at keeping the memories going!
