Rare, 50cents, but no info on net means not in demand either

Postby YetiSeti on Thu Nov 11, 2010 11:00 pm

I just bought a Sord M20 for 50 cents tonight.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=330811193
M20 Series Sord Computer. One of the 1st PC's Imported into NZ From Japan (1981 model) Dual Floppy disc drive, one to run programmes and the other for data.Runs on "Pips" the forerunner to Windows. Also Basic.
This computer was so far ahead of it's time time it was bought out by a larger company and withdrawn from sale.Comes complete with pin drive printer, 2 computers and key boards but only one monitor.

But you know when there's no information on the internet about particular brand and models of computers, no one really cares about them. It's the home computers most of us tend to identify with and where the demand is. I'm sure people didn't really feel they had a 'Personal' relationship with their work class and business computers back in the day.

I think there's a bit of history with this auction so it will be good to document the usage, the where, when, how etc.

has anyone heard of the PIPS language?
http://books.google.co.nz/books?id=EjAEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA5&lpg=PA5&dq=PIPS+language,+sord+computer&source=bl&ots=O2zqBAAArn&sig=_1lyHSGsshvY3SJOeIhvo2Z-Ie0&hl=en&ei=_nTcTN3WOYy4sAOGwpjlAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBwQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=PIPS%20language%2C%20sord%20computer&f=false
PIPS is an English-language, command-driven language that allows users who dno't know anything about computers to write business-applications programs, according to Sord. It integrates a VisiCalc-like spreadsheet and cost analysis as well as graphics and text editing.

Clinton,

Yes, I've heard of Pips but the only experience I've had of it is reading a bit about it in Bits and Bytes. (-:

From memory a member here, Andrew Joll, has one of these computers. I think he's tried to get his up and running so it would be worthwhile making contact with him. His username is arjoll. Look him up in the membership list and drop him a message.

Thanks for the name. I will contact him. PIPS sounds interesting. Any long forgotten or lesser acknowledged prior art with technology is a common theme across 'my museum' (I think I'll always use quotes when referring to that which exists in my head but not reality). In the vernacular I would more routinely refer to it as the "They did that with that, and then?" section.
