Apple II+ Listed as an Apple II .. It might be genuine ignorance of the difference, but call me a cynic..I'm not buying the terribly convenient "top is missing and has been replaced with plexiglass" and "I don't know anything about computers." but he knows enough to be asking $1000 start bid.

I've suggested to him that anyone who knows enough to pay $1000 for a "II" would also know that an A2S-1016 is a "II+" ($100-$250 on a good day with a tail-wind. Less because of the missing top. )

I've seen a few of these (later A2 models advertised as Apple ][) over the past few months. It seems here's a lot of money to be made out of Steve Jobs hysteria.

Relisted at $499... god loves a trier.

Well, at least that's a move downward rather than up. I regularly watch auctions that keep getting re-listed slightly higher than the previous non-selling price.

I just couldn't resist coming back here and posting about the outcome of the auction that was being discussed here (though I have to say, it was helpful to have the history of it documented here). That's the problem with computers arising from estate sales, very often they wind up in the hands of people who have no idea what they have or what it's worth.

Turns out, although this one really is an Apple ][+, it's one of the earlier ones, it's definitely the earliest Apple ][ I currently own. I've been documenting my discoveries and cleanup efforts on it here

But, as it turns out, I'm really glad I sprung for it, and it wasn't all that bad a deal in the end I think. Old (late 1980) motherboard with the dark green slots and 16K RAM select chips, a bunch of interesting cards (CP/M, video, RAM, and a Replay cracking card). My hypothesis about the replaced lid is that it actually served a useful purpose, which was to allow the user to see which LEDs are lit on the various RAM and CP/M cards. Anyway, I've been having fun with it as I slowly explore it, but I thought it might be somewhat interesting to someone to see how it turned out.

Unless I'm reading the auction wrong, you paid US$1000 for it? What motivated you to pay that? There's usually Apple II+'s for less than a quarter of that.

No, no. I paid $350. Still steep, but for the age and condition and cards that were in it, I don't really regret it, and it's not too far off from what other ][+es have been getting recently on eBay.

I think the thing that sold me on this one was the fact that it had a lot of cards in it that I had some interest in, and the fact that considered as a whole the machine was all set up by a serious hobbyist who knew what he was doing.

I did indeed agonize over pushing the button on it for a while, since there were other cheaper options, but as a package I think it held up pretty well. And, the stuff I discovered after I bought it (the Replay card, the old motherboard) makes it pretty worth it (to me) in retrospect, too.

Yep. CP/M card. Other goodies. If you are happy with the price you paid that's what matters.

In context, I paid NZD 250 (Approx USD 200 at today's rates) for a later model American ][+ (not Europlus) with a single Disk ][ drive and no Disk ][ controller (I found that out after receiving it) just over a year ago. USD 350 for an early ][+ with a good selection of boards in it seems no too far off reasonable.
