I think my 1541 drive is out of alignment for my C64...

Postby nzoomed on Sun Oct 16, 2016 6:37 pm

Anyone able to help?
I may need an alignment disk.

Im currently asking on the lemon64 forums, but basically openCBM is giving me the [Fatal] drive 08 (1541): 21,READ ERROR,18,00 error when i try and write an image.

Ive lubricated the rails and cleaned the heads, thr head will go all the way back and bounce about 4 times making a sort of clicking sound (about 4 clicks) and then returns the head to about half way and then i get the error.

Any idea on the fault?

HI

Last night I read about a buffer spring they used to sell in the day to give the drive something comfy to wack into when it reached max travel. I suggest you find the end point and put something in there. Apparently it lowers the chance of the drive banging itself out of alignment.

OK, i have not read anything about that.

The stupid thing is that the head will often bang when formatting the disks etc, i guess this over time is not good either?

Ive got it to write to a disk, but others in the brand new box wont write (with open cbm anyway) but all appear to format on the c64 without any error.

Hi NZ

Yes it bangs by default because of the way its designed. Cant be helped but if you find the end point of travel you can put something there for the drive head to impact against that is less hard. Ive only just heard of this. Ive got quite a few drives including my fav the giant size one early style 1541. Ive read the drives run hot inside too. Once I sort out my little project for sorting the c64 power supply I want to look at the drive side of things. All these things keep going up in price so if your on a shoe string like me I think its good to setup fans /heat sinks/ replace caps and generally baby the hardware so it keeps going. I would never ever want to cut holes for cooling but I wonder if a new drive cover for a 1541 could be make then we could have plenty of vent holes and keep the original cover aside for display drives. A lot use those sd flash card drive simulators but I love the sound of a real floppy myself. That and loading sounds from tape on a Spectrum :)

Placing a battery operated fan on top of the vent would help with cooling :)

Anyway, im getting success with opencbm to write the images, but it seems the first pass will always fail when writing the d64 image, and every write following that seems to be successful so far.

See my output below:

Anyway, im getting success with opencbm to write the images, but it seems the first pass will always fail when writing the d64 image, and every write following that seems to be successful so far.

It also seems formatting the disks has no bearing on this, and they appear to format successful on the c64 and opencbm, yet would still do the same write error when writing an image for the first time.

See my output below:

Re: I think my 1541 drive is out of alignment for my C64...

So are you operating the drive from a PC and not using a real C64? How does it go if you use it on a real c64?

Im using openCBM on a windows pc to write the D64 images to my 1541 drive, yes the drive works fine on the c64 and formats them without error.

As you can see once the first pass with errors is done, im able to successfully write the disks without error from then on.

Ok I had never heard of Open CBM. I recon while your tinkering with it check the drive power supply voltage level. Last thing I used on a PC was that thing called Star Commander and one of those x1541 cables I made myself. Software was slow to use but it did work. I managed to put a few games onto disk successfully years ago.

OK, ive seen that one mentioned too, but i think it does not work on windows 7.

Anyway, the jolly thing does work, but i think its worth checking my alignment first, the tracks could be way out and perhaps this is why?

IDK, but when i get the alignment disk, it will be interesting to check :)

Yes theres more to floppy drives than one would think. I learned just this last week you can have a drive out of alignment that will work fine for you but if you put the disks in another drive it wont be able to read them. lol. Ill forever have a soft spot for them. I obtained on of those fast load carts for a c64 so it will be interesting to try.
