Kaypro 10

Postby LS120 on Mon Apr 15, 2019 5:11 pm

Well had some spare time today so decided to look at the Kaypro-10's there were 2 that came..

open'd up the first and found the keyboard plug on the keyboard unit broken so will have to replace that..

it did have the Handyman card in it.. so i will have to dump the 3 rom's..

so i decided to power it on as it look clean inside... it booted and hdd spun up but nothing on screen....

hmmm oh thats right they have a brightness control on the back.. so adjusted it and bingo we have a green screen with a A:>

dir showed all the files and ran mastmenu.com.. menu came up ok the pop hissssssssssssssss ok switch it off lots of magic smoke..

so i'm going to re-cap both the psu's in the 10's

OK so looking at the 2 Kaypro-10 i seem to that a 10/83 and a 10/84 or (universal) the one thing that got me was the 10/83 still had the small rom socket but no rom in it.. then i noticed reading how to upgrade the rom to the new 28pin for the 64k roms that the HandyMan took over the roll of boot rom and has 2 x 64k srams on it as well as the Z80 with through pins...

but other than pics of the handyman no other info can i find on the net.. other than articles on it (selling adds) of the time.. so ill have to image the disks and look at the txt/doc files on the disks i have..

but both psu's have all caps stripped out for now..

Nice series of posts. I have a Kaypro IV (4/83) and II. The Kaypro don't seem common in New Zealand and this is the first time I have seen anyone mention the Kaypro 10, nice that you have two.

Is the Handyman board the same thing advertised in page 2 of http://retrodepot.net/wp-content/upload ... ofiles.pdf?

If so, looks like you need to find the secret keypress to launch it over the top of whatever else you are doing.

hi and sorry for the late reply.. i've been in AU for 2 weeks... yes its the same card.. i have the disks for it but not looked as the psu died and on getting home found 7 packages awaiting.. i know what i'm doing over the next week lol.

will have a look and let you know.. but mine sits in the cpu socket and the cpu on the handyman card.. so it boot to a menu. thats all i saw before it went pop and magic smoke... (caps)

the card has 2 roms and a ram if the card is to be-leaved.. but i think 3 roms my self..

i have a x2 i also have 4 or IV coming with 2 Osborn-1's and all original disks..

ok so after a week of other work that pays bills and not.. i had some more time to work on the PSU's on the K10's. after a recap of both i re-assembled the 10/83 with the handyman add on and ....... tadaaaaaaaaaaaaa Nothing at all..... what the..... so swapped the other one in and taaaadaaaaaaaa nothing... whats going on here???? so after checking and re-checking couldn't see anything. hmmm lots of head scratching and re-flowing later they both were still dead.. no 12v or 5v but the ac fan works... so must be the psu... so thinking i remembered the kp2 still works and has the same psu in it.. so remove the psu and thats when i saw it.. the 250v caps 1 was miss labled and is backwards.. so de-soldered the 1 cap and re-soldered and bingo all was go again.. looking back on it at the time i replaced them i did question if it was the right way round but well they did mark it that way round.. i was just luck i had one working to check with..

one thing i noticed was the the foam pad in the fan as just about not there and replaced with some crape bandage (thicker type) as the fan needs to have the air flow and i didn't have any foam that thin to replace it with.
