now one thing that had me stumped was how do i use the Handy Man card????? no text file..... no doc file.... hmmmm lets see... DIR... hello there are 3 handy.xxx files hmmm 1 was labeled handy.hlp (help file) so did a type to list the file and yes... at 300000 rpm the file flew by..... hmmm whats the pause command... so reload master menu and look in the kaypro help section... ahhh ctrl + c stops it scrolling... ok armed with that and several ( type handy.hlp ) later i found the basic command screen..

so to all that have the card and dont know what to do ...

CTRL + \ = start Handyman Menu
ESC = Exit Handyman or any module
^ + @ = Print Handyman screen

and others.. but quit to cpm prompt and hold down CTRL + \ to boot up handyman then there is a help (instructions listing) in the menu.

i hope this helps out those whom have a handyman and no instructions..

OK so after talking to some users on the Vintage computer forum i had some things to try..

1st was the z80 CPU... changed with working one and no different..
2nd was the main Rom ... so changed for a advent 84 Rom i had and at least i got beeps but nothing else.. so put original Rom back in.
3rd was ram ... as i was thinking... so replaced all with working 4164's ... and bingo up it came...

well a lot happier now.. but wont boot from HDD, and disk drive says no system files when inserted.. so think maybe fdd needs a look/clean as for HDD it did have a note no errors on it so maybe its blank.. been replaced and then they had this problem?? who knows... well i may try the 10/83 fdd as i know it works... and see if i can get it to boot from a disk.. then maybe the HDD restore software to setup the HDD..

will keep you informed..

well some sad news sorry but the 10/84 would not read a disk so removed and cleaned the drive heads and rails. re-installed and powered on.. now i get power and no

screen, the hdd takes 30-40 sec's to start spin but fdd is dead... i checked and re-checked the cables but still nothing.. i did notice that the R6546-1aps was getting

hot its the CRT Controller so maybe its faulty.. but also wonder if the cables could be playing up. the power to fdd,hdd and hdd controller card could be not good..

so i think tomorrow i may replace the power cables and see what happens.

well its not good news so far... i removed the psu and re-flowed the board to make sure its not that but still wont boot... i then put the psu from the working x2 and still no boot.. the r6545 gets hot to the touch but others do not.. the voltages are all ok to the board.

i will need to look into this more..

ok so another day and lets take another look at this Kaypro-10....

so removed psu and put back the original one .. plugged it all up and nothing.. just power led and hdd led come on.. hmmm talked to some guys on VCF and removed mo/bo and psu.. re-flowed the power connectors for the power in/out.. plugged back in and checked plug to VDU board and plugged in mo/bo... still nothing..

hmmm so removed mo/bo and then thinking did i re-flow the mo/bo power connectors... so reflow them and plugged back up and nothing.. just the 2 led's and hdd spinning..

hmmm pull power off the fdd to see if a power drain.. nope still the same.. ok un-plug the fdd cable and hdd 50pin cable off mo/bo and test...

Bingo it boots to the rom display.. and no garbage..
