Writing real floppy disks from floppy images

Postby tezza on Tue Jan 03, 2012 4:31 pm

This probably belongs under the resoration thread if we take restoration in its widest sense to mean getting the software up and running as well as the hardware.

Anyway, I’ve spent a little of this holiday period writing a few blog articles on writing disk images back to real disks for various systems using MS-DOS/Windows computers. They are not comprehensive reviews nor do they include every method but rather deal with ways that have worked for me, with the hardware that I have.

Check them out if interested. The front page is here.

I found that a CatWeasel card installed in an old AMDK6/500 (Win 95) did the trick for my TRS80 and Amiga software. The CatWeasel is able to read copy protected disks and create disk images that are compatible with the emulators. The disk images can also be written back to a clean/new floppy disk and work like new. Even the copy protected ones.

I'm using the KryoFlux controller. This doesn't allow direct access to files, but is fantastic for reading and writing disk images. At the moment I'm still looking for a reliable 5.25" drive to use with it but I've had great success with 3.5".
