When I was a kid one of my older sisters worked at 246 on Queen St in Auckland and we used to go there to meet her for lunch occasionally. But my main memory of this was the racing game that was there.

It had no screen or anything like that but seemed to consist of a drum with a track and other vehicles on which spun, whilst you steered your vehicle using a steering wheel. Your vehicle seemed to be connected via a stick attached to gears.

Does anyone know what these were called as I would love to lay my hands on one?

p.s. this would have been sometime during the 70's.

Your memory isn't faulty - there were many variations on this sort of game made...

One that I've seen here in NZ before is:

These machines (and related pre-CPU Electromechanical (EM) games) do occasionally show up on Trademe / and/or they exist in peoples collections.

It was very similar to this http://www.pinrepair.com/arcade/roadrac.htm. Same concept of rotating drum and car on the stick.

Hi, I don't know much with the 70's games. But my sister do remembered, there was a racing game that time that our brother used to play. According to her, it could be an Atari's Space Race. It was an arcade game where players controlled spaceships. I'm not so sure if it would make sense. I do hope she is correct.

Not Sure what the name was but remember as a wee kid going to auckland and may have played on it. remember thinking it was amazing. 1975-78ish think there was a handheld version that came out in the 70s maybe 80s that you wound up and then let it run. http://rctoymemories.com/2012/11/16/tom ... eway-1978/

Yep. That was the one I pictured in my mind when I started reading this thread.

Pretty sure a bell tinged as the distance driven indicator clocked up.

I remember one in Christchurch when I was a wee nipper - probably would have been at the bowling alley on Tuam St, or was it the ice skating rink? Or maybe it was the Doghouse burger bar in The Square. :^)
