The Game Master Exhibition at Te Papa

Reminisce about those old games and dedicated gaming hardware

The Game Master Exhibition at Te Papa

I just spent the day with the family in Wellington and while there saw the Retro-gaming exhibition at Te Papa. It was nostalgic fun using those old video consoles again. Reminds me of waiting for fish and chips at the local burger joint back in 1979.

A couple of things surprised me. (1) No mention of text adventure masters (eg. Scott Adams). These were classic games for very early computers with no (or poor graphics) and (2) No mention of Wolfenstein 3D or DOOM which popularised the first-person shooter genre.

Otherwise, well worth a visit. It wasn't just retro-games...it was a journey through different genres (I didn't realise there were so many) and game authors right up to the present day.

No graphics. No sound. No wonder.

So at what FPS did they come in at?

Do you have any photos to share?

Actually I couldn't tell you. It shows just how much of a non-gamer I am. The exhibition was organised by the "games-master" looking at the people who wrote these games rather than a chronological order of development. (although there a was rough order implied). There were some first shooter ones present but I'd have to dive into the exhibition notes to see what these were. None I recognised anyway.

As for photos I only have one of my youngest daughter around the arcade consoles. She doesn't want that up on the web.

LOL. No that wouldn't worry her (She's a software developer). Just respecting her privacy.
