Panasonic JD-850M CP/M machine in Marton

I have been offered a wonderful looking Panasonic JD-850M CP/M machine which is located in Marton. I had it right up until I found the weight to be 50KG (and found my courier Fastway won't take anything over 25kg - wouldn't ship the alien mannequin I wanted to buy either because it was too long). Does anyone use any shipping company with an online calculator for estimating prices (I get tired of having to submit a request and wait for a reply on site when sometimes they don't even reply back) and I really like using the NZ Post rate finder?

I offered 'around $100' (my take on a fair market value for a computer without the name of a fruit) http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?st=1&c=1272

Boxing : 750mm length=675mm width=475mm , 51.5kg
Computer: 540 x 390 x 630 mm / 50 Kg
Location: Marton

Who would be most interested in this? Is Radar the CP/M machine collector? Who can pick up?

I have since found out it comes in original boxing which surely adds to the find (and value) and I also have some history of purchase and use to pass on (with permission).

50KG! OMG That's some serious metal! It must be more than just the console surely?

Sounds interesting Clinton. I'm not sure what you are asking though. Do you want someone to check on it, buy it themselves to save it from the scrapheap, ship it to you, hold it for you until you can arrange shipping or what exactly?

I was just waiting for my ambiguities to be pointed out. It's up for offers to anyone. In all likelihood I imagine it will be a pick up only type computer given the expense of haulage but the person is willing to ship. I can pass on his contact email address to whoever is interested. I will give it a week here then perhaps suggest he put it on trademe (with an optimistic price, and then a drop on re-list).

It seems like just 50KG for the computer! I'm waiting for confirmation as the computer seems to vary in memory and disc configuration by model, but I'm assuming they're 8" drives. 50KG violates my 'have to be able to carry it or move it about myself' general rule.

I certainly would love to see it saved from the scrapheap if it may end up going that way. The price I offer may be different to anyone else (I'm just so use to paying trademe prices for everything). The person seems quite genuine and looking for a good home for it. The Panasonic isn't as extreme in size as some of the other items I have tried to save, and with its weight concentrated into one small package it should fit nicely into a collection for someone who still has room to spare (although I do note a 50cm and a 60cm in the dimensions).

I see from some web-trawling that the case is made of steel hence the weight. This item is definitely not designed for low cost shipping.

This machine is right out of my focus, and getting disks and software (and docs) is not likely to be easy. I don't want it but in saying that I wouldn't like it to go to the tip either especially if it's in good condition physically.

PM me his email. If no-one bites here, let me know when you've suggested he put it on Trade me. I'll then write to him and say I'll give it a home here if he can't sell it and just wants to pass it onto someone.

Pace will take oversized parcels, and have an auto rate finder.
I just used it with the measurements weight above, and its ~$100 from Marton to Mainfreight Depot here in Wellington.
Palmerston North - $61

I'd prefer it went to a CP/M collector too, but if push comes to shove I can also give it a home if Terry doesn't grab it.
Just want to be sure it never ends up in a garbage dump or melted into deck chairs.

Just a note to let those interested know I have rescued this. It's in great condition in it's original box and came with dozens of 8 inch floppies.

My life is so hectic at the moment I simply shoved it in a corner of the garage. What with rehearsing for a show and work in top gear, the VC hobby is on hold. At some stage I'll take some pictures though. Then I need to ascertain whether or not the machine works and whether the floppies can be read. Some look in good condition...some do not. They have been stored in a garage for years so go figure. At the moment I've stored them when I've got my other software. In a dry wardrobe inside the house.

Nice one Terry, saw "Marton" in the subject line and had to check this post out. I was even going to offer a sturdy L200 to help shift it but see that you were able. Defintely would like to see some pics!!!

Yes, I couldn't fit it into the boot of the car. I had to shoehorn it into the back of the car where the huge and heavy box fitted...only just!

Great! Thanks for saving this. And I see no mention of throwing your back out, so it must be all good.
