Just for anyone else who may be reading this, David and I switched to email for our communication.

I think I know what's causing my PC to drop the connection, and that is something on David's side not answering my call fast enough, or at all, for that matter, and the software timing the connection out.

I just tested out my BBS server, and it seems to answer. I'll have it up around 6PM tomorrow, and I'll post the number then.

Does anyone apart from David and I have dial-up capabilities here?

No me. BTW, David, Clmy5.

I've moved this discussion to the "General" Forum. It's more appropriate there.

Happy BBS'ing

I was wondering how long it'd take to be moved!

I'd love to host a 24/7 BBS, but the landline still gets used here, and I'm sure my grandparents would rather talk to me than a 9600 baud modem...

Quick update, David managed to connect to my makeshift Wildcat! BBS at 9600 baud. I had a go at customizing Wildcat!, but due to DOS not wanting to show me directories currently, I can't.

Hi there. Watching this thread with interest. I don't offer a dial up connection but do run a Fidonet connected BBS that you either Telnet into or login to via my website http://www.bbs.geek.nz.

If you are interested in running a BBS I'd recommend Mystic BBS, it's what I am using and unlike most BBS software packages - it's still in active development.

If you would like help to set up and get a feed of message areas etc. let me know and I'll do my best to help you.

It seems there are few users who wish to call in to a BBS these days, but there are others who either remember doing so who want to do so again, or who never experienced this kind of pre-internet (and now post internet) style of communication.

Cheers, A.

Ooh, I'll telnet in sometime in the next few days. I've never used an actual BBS!

Thanks for the recommendation! I was having issues getting Wildcat! to do what I wanted. Custom ANSI art on the main screen, moving text, ect. I might take you up on that offer of help in the near future, thanks Avon!

If I do set a BBS up, it would just be for kicks. I wouldn't do it for its practical use really. It also wouldn't be 24/7, as the phone gets used often. A schedule would be possible though.

I wont have my 486, or a landline for a week, so any BBS work will have to be put on hold for the meantime.

I'll have a go at connecting again around 10 or 11.

Been flooded with work and stuff, so I haven't had the chance to reply to emails and such.

Same issue as last time. It dials, rings for one and a half rings, and throws a busy message. Your hardware isn't answering in time.

I'm sorta digging up an old thread ... but, I would love to dial into some BBSs (not telnet) however, I have know idea where to start, I can only just remember dialup and BBSs were long gone before I was even born (1999) so any help is welcome :). I went looking for an analog modem, I found two possibilities: both PCI cards, will these work? (I can plug an ADSL cable into them)

Thanks in advance for any help :) Joe
