PC to Amiga 4000 file transfer

Postby Clym5 on Mon Mar 23, 2015 7:56 pm

Hey all,

Finally got the 4000 all ready to be reassembled, but I'm not doing it quite yet, as I want to find a way to easily transfer files between my PC and it. On my 1200, I used the PCMCIA slot and a CF card, and that worked great! The 4000 doesn't have that, so the way I've been putting files on it is to take the HDD, attach it to my PC, mount it in WinUAE and copy files to the emulated Amiga using the real HDD. Works, but not ideal.

It has a modern IDE CD drive, so there's always the option of using CDs, and maybe CD-RW if I'm lucky? Is there another way to transfer files? Some super simple serial thing? USB would be awesome, but the Subway USB controller costs $140 USD or something, and it needs another $100+ part to work on the 4000.

you need amigaforever and amiga explorer you can nullmodem cable between the pc and amiga and transfer over to the 4000 or use terminal program
and transfer by zmodem with nullmodem cable.

I use EasyTransfer to get files to my A1200. I have an old Compaq with Windows 95 (prerequisite is something old enough to run the DOS comms tool) that sits next to the 1200, it basically just serves as a proxy between the 1200 and my modern desktop. Connects with a basic serial cable. It's slow though, and without a serial card in the 1200 it'll only do 38400bps.

Alternately there's the network route, but AFAIK you'd need a Zorro based network card. Not that common now... hit amibay?

Thanks for the suggestions! I've got some big fancy serial/parallel and midi card for the 4000, so I might go down that route since the speed shouldn't be too atrocious.

Some of the files I'm wanting to transfer range from 4kB to 600MB. I could always write CDs if I needed to. Haven't tried RW yet.

I'm somewhat new to having a nice WB install, so I'm still sorting out lots of small issues. Like the copper background not being smooth, installing programs to the easy-access menus and wondering why 140MB of RAM isn't enough to run some demos. (Works from AmigaDOS though?)
