Anyway, let me know what you think. I've opened a poll for feedback: http://www.vintage8bit.com/node/68. If I get I get enough of a positive response I'll seriously start looking at costing such an event.

Sounds pretty good to me. However a couple of things. One problem with a public event is that we might not get too much time to actually visit each others' displays and/or interact with each other. I'd like to have a good look at your Dragon and Oric but if I spend the whole day showing off my Lisa and System 80 to the public (and guarding them FROM the public) I may not be able to circulate as much as I'd like. Perhaps this could be solved by opening to the public later in the morning rather than first thing to give ourselves a chance to network/see what we've got.

The other thing is the date. I'm not sure I will be able to make it on a weekend in November simply because of other "out-of-work" commitments which are already booked this year. And I would really want to come. Sometime in February 2012 or beyond would be far better for me and I could probably help more with the organising too.

OK - let's assume the date might be early next year then.

I'll still try to organise something small on/around 11th Nov though - the combination of 11/11/11, 40 years since the genesis of the microcomputer revolution, and my birthday is just too compelling an opportunity to miss :)

Andrew, I can see where you're coming from. I'd like to see the hobby becoming a little like vintage car collecting, where the general public really wants to SEE these things. The very reason I started collecting was because I (eventually) wanted to show and tell people about microcomputers.

I thought I had better get my name down on this one (better late than never 8)) as I would be pretty keen to participate on some level.

Having grown up with parents who were members of the Auckland Vintage Car club, I got to see how things rolled  with local chapters and annual get-tog ether's for Rally's & Gymkganars; great fun and ultimately rewarding times.

It sounds like chapters are already appearing organically and it would be great to introduce a bit more organisation to the mix and an event in a main center to get every one together is certainly the way to kick it off.

Coming from Auckland some where central ie Rotorua or Taupo would be a good location for a North Island based event or alternatively three separate events nationwide in locations most central to the geographical distribution of the members. Just bare in mind if you want public participation it will need to based close to a decent population base.

Planning a national event properly will take time so 2012 is definitely a more realistic time frame. Perhaps this forum could play a central part to seeing who is willing to jump on board re attendance and event organisation which may mean an advertising banner on the forum website... Terry? Food for thought
