Slightly Younger Vintage Collector

Postby scamp3 on Wed Jun 24, 2009 11:50 pm

Hello,

My name is Sean I live in a small town called Whitby near Porirua in Wellington, I'm 18 currently doing a degree in I.T. at a polytech and I love collecting old vintage computers.

I'm not sure what got me started with them, I think it was when I found Dads old commodore 64 and asked if I could have it (until then I was into modern PC's so I thought it was a stupidly big keyboard). I plugged it in tryed it out learn't some BASIC commands and now it's my favourite thing. I think I love the restoration part of collecting the most and the good feeling that occurs when something works in the end.

My collection consists of:

5 Commodores 64's (3 normal and 2 C64C's)
Commodore 128
Commodore VIC-20
Dick Smith VZ-200
Sharp PC-5000 Portable (one of the early laptops)
Apple II Euro Plus
Apple IIe Platinum (which I recieved in the mail today)
Amstrad PCW8256
Amstrad CPC6128
Amstrad PC2086D

And thats it so far, some of them have problems which I plan to address in the near future by looking for help online. And I plan to keep collecting (mosly from trademe).

A good start Sean,

I have a few of those models myself. If I had a desert Island computer out of that lot it would be the Apple II Europlus. A vintage classic.

Yea, one thing I found when I started collecting these things is older technology is not as reliable as modern stuff and they often have issues. On the other hand, they can be easy to fix once you know where the fault lies unlike more modern machines with their LSI chips. Parts can be an issue of course and actually diagnosing the fault can be a challenge.

It's very rewarding when you do though.

Cheers
