DCS Airduster - what a rip off!

Postby Matt on Sat Dec 27, 2014 8:23 am

I've been buying these cans of compressed gas for $24. You blow out a couple of
machines and the thing is almost empty. I'm guessing you serious collectors must
be doing something different or you'd be broke - like to hear what people use.

It's a convenience product for small crevices. You'll definitely find it expensive if you're expecting to blow out whole machines with it.

Obviously you have to be careful what you touch with a normal household vacuum. but I remove the bulk of the dust this way. Also the small nozzle on blow on a normal household vac can work wonders after you've vacuumed out the bulk of the dust.

Then finish off with a static strap and a soft brush... and anything hard to reach might use a small blat with airduster.

Yes, those cans don't last long. I used one once from Jaycar and got about the same mileage you got from yours.

I only use compressed air cans to blow out stuff from inside a keyboard.

I tend to brush out bad dust, and for a real clean I get a soft toothbrush (not the Mrs') and some soapy water - then rinse with fresh water, and rinse again with isopropyl. Mitre 10 sells Isopropyl off the shelf - $16 for a litre I think - but I got a big bottle of 99% off trademe ages ago.

The other thing with compressed air cans, is after you've used them, the liquid in the bottom can squirt out on to whatever you're cleaning (well it did for me).

I tend to always have a can of compressed air lying around. Not sure how, since I'm too broke from buying parts for systems!

I generally only use it for getting dust out of hard to reach places and keyboards.

I've had that super cold liquid spray over a PCB a few times, and apart from making it go all frosty, it hasn't damaged anything once it has gone. When the can is empty, its kinda fun to mess about with it, since its really cold!
