Postby LilJoe on Tue Jan 06, 2015 4:21 pm

I'm looking into getting one one of these and I'm wanting to know a) Does anyone have any that are unwanted/for sale ect.? and b) What will I be looking at cost wise? I see them very rarely show up on TM and I have know idea what they are worth.

There's one up on TM now. http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/vint ... 698136.htm Please, excuse my ignorance, but why does the SC-3000 seem so revered around here?

Yeah its a little out of my price range...

And regards to why a computer that failed to gain a world wide market, with low specs on paper and outdated graphics and sound means something to me... Its along story but I will try and shorten it :D

probably about 2-3 years ago I first heard about the SC-3000, from memory it was on TM, so I googled it... I didn't care much for it, to me SEGA was trying to do something they didn't do (make computers) kinda like Commodore's 64GS (they didn't make consoles) and failed at it... My opinion stayed like that, stationary for a long time, until...

One day I was playing some atari 2600 games with my cousin on my wii (long story short of why atari games, my cousin's grandfather still has his [atari] and my cousin said he was getting pretty good at Mario Bros. so I took him on :) ). My Aunty walked in and said something along the lines of "It would be cool if you could play SEGA games as well." I asked her to describe what 'it' (the SEGA) looked like so I could find out exactly which model I narrowed it down to pre SMS and eventually to the SC-3000. I got an emulator, played some flicky with my Aunty, and I told her that one day I would try and get my hands on a real one...

After that I researched it more, I learned about its penetration in the NZ market and its failed launch in the states, I learned to love the SEGA and still do.

I sadly missed out of the microcomputer revolution (I'm a 90s kid) yet I still find micros that mean more to me than others, the SC-3000 is one of those.

I think on reflection, the Sega ended up having a strong NZ influence. That could be a major reason why they are followed quite closely. I remember seeing them as a young lad in various stores. Grandstand Leisure back in the day promoted them strongly until they dropped the line for Amstrad.

I had a ZX Spectrum, Atari 130 XE etc when I was younger, and all the software I had was UK/US. For the Sega high quality software was written here in NZ.

cheers

They're a particularly interesting little system, maybe not enough that I'd go out of my way to acquire one if I didn't already have one. Flicky is a standout in the game library, but it also got rereleased on the Megadrive, and is part of the Sega Megadrive Ultimate Collection on the Xbox 360, so...

eisa on Trademe. A lasting reminder of a Compaq fetish when I was younger.
