What's your normal PC setup?

Postby Clym5 on Sun Mar 29, 2015 1:33 am

Since I joined the forum, I've always wondered, what do these people use with it isn't a Apple IIe or a C64! No time like the present to ask, I guess.

I'll withhold my main rig's specs for a bit, but it's in a massive case, fully populated (8) with 5.25" floppy drives that make a racket when powered up. Just for kicks. Always an amusing spectacle at LAN parties and such.
Amiga 4000: Apollo Turbo 040, 128MB Fast, 40gb HDD, CD-ROM (needs internet)
C64: 1541U-II, MixSID, WiFi, LumaFix64
ZX Spec, A1200, CD32, MacPlus/SE, A500, BBC Turbo Master (NASA), 2600, Acorn 4000, VIC-20, IBM 5155, GameBoy

Retina Macbook Pro 15.4 hooked into a 4k display with Steelseries keyboard/mouse.

Boots OSX, WIndows - has VMs for Linux. Just a workhorse.

(Also have a Surface RT for testing IE on slow machines - and a "gaming PC". (Haswell i7 overclocked, 16GB RAM, Radeon R9 290x, 2x 512GB SSDs etc etc)

But, rMBPro is the king of the castle.

Ooh, some nice systems! My main rig is a i7 3770K, 8GB 1600MHz RAM and a Radeon R9 280X (OC'd).

Laptop is a terribly beat-up HP DV7. Early i7, 6770HD GPU.

I got a 2009 Mac Pro yesterday, and I'm in the process of getting it going. Hardware works now, but I'm looking for the best OS X version for it. I'm looking at 10.6.

EDIT: Most of my text editing is done on my DEC 486 DOS rig, WordPerfect 5.1. Not sure why, but its much nicer. Kinda satisfying too.

Right now its an old 2.5Ghz Quad core, Win 7, 8Gb, 3Tb Sata, 256Gb SSD and an old dual head GeForce 8800 running 2 x 24" LED screens. Its not quite as grunty as the workstation at work, but it does what I need it for (and it was cheap - a barter-exchange for some 3D work for a friend).

Primary use is as a graphic workstation for 3D and compositing work.

I also have another even older Quad core, lower specced but with a better video card that gets used by the wife for emails and web browsing. Also drag around a 10.1" Samsung Tab 4 for general video watching on the bus ride to work, occasional gmail and chromecast controller... And various other old PCs stacked with other boxes in the room here (Celeron 700, Athlon 1Ghz, etc) but those are more hoarded old hardware (old 3D workstations when they were regarded as 'fast') and not so much in use...

I also run with a Macbook with latest Mac OS and max RAM, and another Nec laptop for XP testing or optical disc use.

I use a 7" tablet for Andriod testing of my android stuff.

My kettle is the best on the market, digital smart jug. When im not using the breville espresso maker.

I dont own a desktop computer, and have no desire to ever own a desktop.

just in case this thread becomes about biggest and best I drive a freehold bmw outside and another freehold motor in the garage and live in a brand new house (4 months old) (in an expensive upmarket side of town) and I have no payments to ever make, I dont have HP,loans or a credit card ! I owe no money and have no dependants, and do what ever I like because I am not tied to a day job, im 46 and havent worked for 15 years :P

...why don't we just cut to the chase then - I've got a 16" penis.

I think the original question was more directed at what people are using day to day, and how it links into the vintage hobby, if at all. Mine doesn't much.. I have a laptop I use for work, and I find the thinkpads robust and reliable.

I've also got craploads of unintentionally collected (PC Clone) detritus that spans the last 25 years in ADDITION to my vintage kit, that I can't bear to throw out, but no time to distill it down to an organised "narrative" at the moment. (or even properly functional tweeners.)

Desktop: Intel Core i7 930 overclocked to 4Ghz - 256GB SSD + 500GBx4 in RAID10, 6GB in triple channel (old X58 setup) - I built this quite a while ago now and other than installing the SSD, haven't felt any desire to upgrade, does 1080p H264 encoding faster than I can watch it, good enough for me. ATI (yeah, before AMD bought them) 4850 graphics, dated but hasn't been any PC games recently that've inspired me enough to grab something new.

Laptop: Sony Vaio - Core 2 Duo 2.2 - does the job - mostly use this for watching videos or quick internet browsing etc, discrete GPU (ATI Radeon - can't remember the series - but it's fairly dated now too)

Built a low cost machine for my wife last year, Core i3 @ 3.4 (turbo to 3.8 I beleive), popped an AMD Radeon card in it, can't remember the moddel but it was only about $80 and comparable to my old 4850, enough so she can play games without relying on IntelHD and pretty snappy to use on the desktop.

All run Windows 7.

lol! Don't we all - why I'm keeping things like Celeron's when I never intend to turn them on I never know. Add that a hoarded collection of drives (loads of CDR's and HDD's) from all the old machines... Its that "don't throw it away, just in case..." mentality.

These days we live in a throw-away society where its cheap enough to just go down the road and buy a new component when one dies...
