When other hobbies get in the way of your hobbies

Postby tezza on Sat May 26, 2012 9:43 am

Vintage computer projects have been put on hold for me just at the moment. I'm singing in the local production of CHESS. Unbelievably complex harmonies that I have to practice virtually every night! Argg!

Arghhh... yeah.. too many hobbies. My Apple II's haven't come out of their boxes in many months. The list of commitments getting in the way is long.

Chess is a great show though. I've had my eye on singing Freddie for years but I didn't even audition for the (currently running) Auckland AMT production. (I have War of the Worlds due to start preparation soon.)

What are you singing?

Freddie is a top role. Haven't got the voice for that one unfortunately.

I'm just in the ensemble/choir so backing, and singing in the songs where people are en mass (Merano, Endgame(s), Merchandisers, One night in bangkok etc. etc.). I'm a russian in a few of them. I do have two solo lines as the Mayor of Merano ("Speaking as one of the partiarchs, I don't mind taking your lira or marks")..lol

The harmonies are pretty complex....blame those ex-ABBA Swedes! Great sound though.

We are doing the Phantom of the Opera in 2014. I'd love to be one of those two theatre owners. I'll have to work towards that. :)

Yea, great fun and very social of course.

Oh yeah, but it's worth it. Love the sound.

REALLY?!!!!

I didn't realise that they'd finally made the rights available. Might even make the trip to audition for that. (The Phantom is top of my list I'm slowly working through.)

Yes, only very recently. From what I understand it will be a consortium job, like some of the other shows we've done. That means a number of theatres in NZ share costumes and set. If the consortium's a similar makeup to previous years, North Shore may be involved.

Two hobbies not good, its always a constant either the Old Motorcycles or the 8 Bit computers, summer ride the bikes, winter play with the 8 bits, but even then you get the crossover in seasons,

Yeah while the sun's shining I'm working on electricals and some welding projects on my Fiero, so the old computers are somewhat sidelined.

I've also had a break from trying fix old computers (my %^%$%^$ Apple III is still not happy) and have been doing a ground up strip / repair / clean / restore on a Data East "The Who's Tommy Pinball Wizard" Pinball machine. Fixing Pinball machines is a really nice mix of electronics and mechanical work.

In some sort of odd coincidence with earlier comments in this thread, the theme / songs are actually based on the Broadway Muscial version of Tommy.

Not a hobby but they certainly are a money sink. First house or an upgrade?

Dude, weren't they not happy from day one? :)

A related hobby has been getting in the way mind you.

Composite modded, power LED and buttons changed for a more modern finish. I feel like I'm ten all over again.

I've put my other hobbies to the side while I do vintage, all except one, the live-in girlfriend who I have to carefully divide time with :P Working on physical gear is ok, because she can hang out, but when I'm knee deep in Borland C / C# .NET it's usually best if I plan and tell her in advance.

No cats or megadrives, but I did buy her an Xbox Kinect on the weekend which has distracted me a fair bit from my little projects (the Bowling on Kinect Sports is quite addictive).

Next year I'm hoping to have finally sorted out a house to buy, so I suspect any vintage work may be put to one side while I earn some DIY man points.

Hah.. planning is a waste of time for me. There is no such thing as "according to plan" when you have a toddler. :D

Everything is late. Everything takes four times as long as it should... and EVERYTHING is at the mercy of how rested her mum is. If her mum reaches that "too tired" point, then even my own funeral would be potentially cancelled.

She's a temperamental kitty, she was sitting there all upset after she'd been banished from the couch for gnawing on the wife. :)
