How many vintage computers have you got?

Postby matsondawson on Fri Jan 04, 2013 1:20 pm

I just counted and it's about 90!
And that's only from 3 years collecting.
I keep wanting to sell any excess, but my mental condition prevents me from doing it.
I still regret selling an HX-20 2 years ago.

lol! Let me be the sad minority - I have just 2 - ZX Spectrum and an Atari 600XL + 1050 FDD (but no software for it). I did have a ZX81 with 16k rampack/ps and manuals, but I managed to ruin the keyboard membrane by being lame enough to open it up for a look. In the end, I gave it to a friend for his personal collection several years ago.

I keep wanting to sell any excess, but my mental condition prevents me from doing it.

I know exactly where you are coming from. Though I did flog off a Speccy book I never read (to YetiSeti) and a second copy of an old Computer Input magazine... That was hard, but its not hurting any more. lol! :D

My mental state-of-mind is why I have a few box-loads of additional related stuff (mostly for the Speccy) that I've been unable to part with - dragging things from one house to another for 30+ years. Hundreds of cassettes, hundreds of magazines, a selection of books, and several peripherals... When I next get under the house, I'll do a proper inventory cause I'd like to know exactly what I have hoarded away. That's my new years resolution - to at least try and convince the wife to let me build shelves upstairs and bring it up into the dry house vs. damp dungeon.

Apart from the packaging, the cassettes may be well past their use-by date or just mouldy enough to ruin any tape decks. Its just nice to see all the case covers, old price tags and tape labels... If I'm desperate, I could always just download and write archived emulator files out to a tape deck so not so concerned.

I wonder if people open their moldy vintage cassettes and put new reals in them?

I've got 46. which I've written about on my collection page here:
http://www.classic-computers.org.nz/col ... /index.htm

..but I also have a few items extra to that namely a Commodore PC-5, a a Shimasu 286-16 and an a RCA CDP1802 (COSMAC) trainer. Plus a 486-DX.

Lack of room puts the brakes on my collecting. The only items I'm looking for now are:

A Mac 128
A Jupiter Ace
A Compucolour
Atari 800

An Altair would be nice but no hope there.

machinecoder wrote:(They printed the Laser Basic Compiler User Guide Book with red pages to make it impossible
to photocopy ! ) I thought its cool printed on bright red paper.

I have White Lightning in my collection and they printed their tiny manuals on dark green paper for the same reason. That said, I never really read the manuals - I bought the software with dreams of writing seriously cool games - then I found I had to learn Forth to do it, and I tried - I think the reason I stopped was because one of the example programs actually didn't compile or work after I typed it in a few times, so the novelty wore off quickly - in the end I just opted to learn Z80 assembler. Much more satisfying...

If it was me, I would seriously consider getting rid of some of the furnture to make room...

Have you seen those shows about hoarders, appearantly you could box and stack them in the hall ways,
gets a bid hard to move about though.

Seriously though its good to see really dedicated collectors like you have so many vintage computers as they wont go to a waste dump or be neglected, basically they will definitely be preserved which is whats really important.

Ye gods... No wonder I always end up having to spend so much to win bids against you. :)

I'm STILL kicking myself for some of my old disposals. I got rid of my original IIe and my 386DX40 and my 486's and I actually had one of the rare-as-rocking-horse-shit "Harris" 25MHz 286 machines that was so damned quick it just about could have run Doom... All gone now.

I have a mere 16 machines, not counting the 7 modern machines+laptops I have hanging around... Almost insignificant compared to some.. :)

Apple II (1978)
Apple II+ (w/CFFA3000)
Apple II europlus
Apple IIe (PAL Standard w/monitor II)
Apple IIe (NTSC 110v enhanced w/Philips 110v green) - This is the machine that I blew up in front of mrad01 :)
Apple IIe (PAL Platinum w/color)
Apple IIgs ROM01 (broken monitor, which is why I have one of those configurable CGA RGB's on the way.)
Apple IIgs ROM03 (RGB) w/4Mb + 10MHz accelerator)
Apple IIc w/green
Apple IIc w/IIc Color.
Macintosh 4/75 w/IIe card + a genuine 68040 (so in effect a quadra 605)
XT clone w/20MB that has bad sectors and a dodgy keyboard
noname clone 386sx Laptop w bad sectors and a dodgy LCD inverter.
AST 486DX2/66
PC Direct Pentium 90
Pentium II 440BX (Asus P2B.. one of the "classic overclockers"... Running a P-II-350 @392MHz with a Riva TNT.. This is my last "quake machine" before "Gibsaw" stopped playing competitively. :) )

... plus more Dell GX110's than I know what to do with.

Yep... doing lots of reading about switching power supplies (in general).

So far from what I'm reading, it shouldn't be too hard. They should be fixable as long as I don't need any custom transformers.

Ok my collection is currently sitting at 17:
[*]Amstrad 6128
[*]Apple IIc, IIe x2, IIe Enhanced, Quadra of some description
[*]Commodore: PET/CBM 8032, VIC-20, 64C
[*]Compaq LTE Lite 486/25
[*]HP 85
[*]IBM PC 5150
[*]Sinclair ZX81
[*]Sord: M23 mk III x2, M23EX, M68

Plus of course various matching (and not matching) monitors, drives etc.

I think that's the lot :) Much of it is still untested, but I'm hoping to start working through more of the gear in the coming months.

My wish list now is mainly:
[*]TTL RGB monitor (for my Apple II RGB card and a backup for the Sords)
[*]BBC Model B
[*]Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48k
[*]Sinclair ZX81 16k RAM pack
[*]Teac 100tpi 5.25" floppy drives, the Sord M23 mk III ones are a little flakey
[*]Anything else from Sord - there were quite a number around in NZ in the early-mid 80's but very few seem to have survived.
'arjoll' on Trademe
Wishlist: BBC model B, Spectrum 48k and anything Sord.

I don't have a formal list.

Back in New York a couple of years ago, I counted how many were in just my study; it came to 49. Not all of them 'vintage' by any means.

That didn't include the double garage and basement, or the machines back in the UK.

I'm guessing the total is 150-200 or so.
