Husky hunter 16 kaput

Postby matsondawson on Fri Apr 05, 2013 6:49 pm

I got it today and the screen was dead, but it still beeped.
I opened it and found a combo of a design flaw and a leaking battery destroyed a ribbon connector.
Un-repairable.
It was meant to be in "All in good working condition"

Oh bugger. I've had a couple of battery leak trade me specials. It's not fun.

Obviously the term "good working condition" was applied rather loosely. Like my Vic 20 where "powers up' simply meant the light went on.

I got it working last night to show a screen!
Unfortunately that cracked ribbon connector means 10 keys don't work.
So yes, it will need reselling stating middle row of keys don't work.

A ribbon connector is unrepairable? I wouldn't have thought so. Photo?

Where there's a will there's a way, I've seen damaged traces in plastic flexible ribbons repaired using PCB trace pens and clear tape before. It's not exactly pretty but it can work :)

Calm down on the heckling Amigas dude, leaky drum batteries were an of-the-era thing, everyone was using them in their RTC designs in the late 80s early 90s.

Cap plague is a problem to this day - every few weeks I get Compaq SR5xxx machines with AMD processors turning up with all nine 1800uF caps burst, five years ago it was the same problem but Solteks, before that it was Macs... everyone gets a turn to have the plague :)

Many of my old PCs have had a variant of capacitor plague.
One of them hit me. At least I didn't have to desolder it though.

In HP/Compaq's case, it's due to picking providers to supply components on contract. The affected units are manufactured by Elitegroup ECS, the MCP61PM-HM 'Nettle' - they replaced this model with a Pegatron supplied unit (at the time, a subsidiary of ASUSTeK) which I've seen no issues with whatsoever. Consequently the Pegatron uses modern polymer caps, which should help.

I usually get mine from badcaps.net but really anywhere you can find good Nichicons...

But enough about that, how's the Husky? :)
