GameBoy 8-bit TV system from India

Postby honestbob on Mon Nov 18, 2013 9:04 pm

Hi All

One of the guys from work is in his mid 20s and grew up with this system manufactured in December 2000 and sold in India (but manufactured in China). He gave it to me this morning because it is bust. I haven't tried it out yet and probably won't have time for a couple of weeks.

Does anyone recognise it? If I had to guess, I'd say it is a (illegal) Master System or NES clone. It has 8 bit Super System on the box and the multi-carts that came with it look similar to Sega / Nintendo artwork from the 90s.

Four spectacular color!

Those carts are shaped like Famicom (NES) carts. Not conclusive though. Looks like a neat system if you can get it to work.

Awesome! Did that come with Teenage Mutant Ninj... Ahem, I mean Storm Racer?

That looks basically identical to the SNES I have here - except its a groovy green color. Of course, that doesn't mean the insides are the exact same - but I'd reckon if it look like it, its probably an SNES clone. Seems that Media Entertainment in India were producing clones of NES gear : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Entertainment_System_hardware_clone#India...

It was funny when I just did a quick google on Indian NES clones - India also produced an NES-clone based home computer - extremely (well, ridiculously!) cheap as well! Would be interesting to get one as a collectors piece...

Thanks for the NES suggestions and links. Very interesting reading. You are right - it looks just like one of the Famicon clones. I'm guessing it is a Super NES / Famicon just from the vintage (2000ish).

Yeah, I love the rebadged artwork too :) It is Software Y2K Approved too :)

I opened it up tonight to figure out what sort of power supply I need. Looks like 9v dc Center negative interfacing to a 7805 5v voltage regulator inside the case.

Very simple inside. I will post photos tomorrow (writing this on my phone).

Looks like a single chip hidden under some plastic gunk which emulates the capabilities of the original hardware. A real SNES is more like 1990 vintage so I assume that originally had more distinct components. (I've never used a NES or SNES)

The games cartridge contacts are horribly corroded and worn so I will probably try cleaning those and the cart slot before trying to power it up to see what happens.

Here you go - interior photos. Very simple boards compared to the full IC based boards I'm used to, but still not a fully integrated solution like the little Sega Genesis Megadrive emulator in a tiny box I bought a year or so ago. It still appears to have a seperate RF modulator section and a seperate board just to break out the joystick interface. You can see the black plastic glob covering the main chip on the shot of the underside of the PCB.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to plug it in and see what the problem is tonight. I'd like to open the cartridge cases without removing the stickers to make them easier to clean, but I can't feel any screw recesses hiding under the stickers. Not much room to buff the contacts without opening the cases.

BTW - the carts appear to have 60 pins which I think is the Japanese Famicon standard.

Interesting that they printed the warranty period on the circuit board. I haven't seen that before.
