compaq 286

Postby Matt on Wed Feb 05, 2014 1:52 pm

I just had someone phone offering me what she described as a "compaq 286". She thinks it's in good nick because it's been stored somewhere warm. Has monitor and keyboard. I wasn't able to make her an offer she was happy with so I turned it down. If anybody is interested I can find out more about it. Spidersweb wants the deskpro 386 because of the historical thing about compaq beating ibm to 32 bits right? Ie if this one is a deskpro it's less collectible despite being older?

*gasp* I'd love a Compaq 286 anyway!

Yep the 386 was the important one because IBM didn't want to release a 386 as Intel refused to allow it to be 'second sourced' - so if you wanted a 386 when it was new, you had to turn your back on big blue.
It may be more interesting as far as history goes, but the 286 would be fantastic as well because it was still the major competitor - the only Compaq's in my collection are a 4/25 Contura laptop, 486 portable and Pentium desktop - I'm quite lacking in the Compaq department.

I'll phone her back this morning and up my offer a bit.

Do you have any apple2 gear you'd be willing to part with?

Box of disks that were used with an Apple IIc but that's it sadly.
