Calling all Mac nuts - need advice on which Mac to keep

Postby Carcenomy on Sun Nov 07, 2010 5:27 pm

So here's the scenario. I recently picked up a pair of lovely old 68k Macs.

One is an LC575. Nice 14" trinitron display, but the power supply is sketchy and the speakers do not function. The VRAM is seperate on the board, and it has a single SIMM slot with 16MB in it. It uses SCSI drives throughout.
The other is a Performa 580. 14" still but shadow mask and meh, but it runs solid. Dual SIMM slots with 32MB total, soldered VRAM, IDE drives, everything works.

The 575 is the last of its board layout therefore cannot be expanded, the 580 uses the Quadra 630 board layout and therefore can also use PowerMac 5xx0 PPC boards if desired...

Which do I keep? I don't have space for all these freakin Macs (already have a Classic and some PowerMac 7x00s) and the two AIOs are both 040 33MHz units...

Or do I try hybriding them by splitting it all apart and using the Trinitron display on the 580's later underpinning? Can that even be done? Argh, decisions!
Just the local Commodore hobo and middle-aged PC hoarder.
eisa on Trademe. A lasting reminder of a Compaq fetish when I was younger.

Hmm, those are a little newer than I normally deal with :) but... my 2c would be keep the LC575, from memory if you throw a full 040 CPU into it you could install Linux on it (if your so inclined) :)

Both would be fun tho of course :)
