A big hello from Ontario Canada

Postby Columbo on Sun Feb 23, 2014 4:01 am

Hello from Ontario Canada. I guess I am the "new kid on the block" on this forum. Terry very graciously approved my registration and a big thank you to Terry for doing so. Terry explained to me that the forum was mainly for residents of New Zealand however, while I reside in Ontario Canada, I do have an interest in vintage computers and this looked like an interesting forum to be a part of.

Currently I have a Commodore 4032 PET, a Commodore 64C, an Atari 1040ST and I have recently acquired an 80286 machine running DOS 6.2. It runs at 8MHz but has the Turbo switch to increase to 16MHz. I do have a bit of a problem with the 80286 machine but I'll post that in a different forum.

Aside from computers, my other hobby is Ham Radio and I do periodically "chew the rag" with other Hams in New Zealand and Australia. So that is my introduction and I am sure I'll enjoy my visits here on New Zealand Vintage Computing.

Cheers.

Hello and welcome!

That's a good start for a classic computer collection. Are you looking to expand the collection, or are you happy with the those noteworthy models thus far?

There are a couple of others that I wouldn't mind getting but my wife is well satisfied with what I already have. (She's not into computers.) All of these computers are up and running and I'm not sure I have room for many more. :) I wouldn't mind a 386 machine though. I still have some of my old DOS software and I even pondered with the idea of setting up a BBS on a 386 using PCboard 15.2, which I still have, just for the sake of nostalgia. I would have to pick up a modem for it though. My 1200 baud crapped out years ago.

I still have GFA Basic for my Atari 1040ST as well. That was a great basic compiler back in the day. It was sold by Michtron in the U.S and Canada. And of course I have a ton of Commodore 64 games and stuff. I have Jiffy DOS installed in the 64C and one of the floppy drives. It really does make a difference in the load time. I also still have quite a bit of games and stuff for the PET. My dual drives for the PET crapped out a couple of decades ago so for now I am using the slooooooowww cassette tape drive.

Sounds like the PetDisk would be a good solution for that.

Actually I ordered a PetDisk and just received it. Haven't had a chance to try it yet though. I also got a similar device for the Commodore 64C along with a ZoomFloppy. :)
