Hello everyone, my name is Matt, I live in the United Kingdom and I like to collect vintage IBM systems. I have a small collection of just two systems at the present but they just seem to be getting harder and harder to find. My collection does include an IBM PS/2 70 and an IBM Netvista Pentium 4(all in one). I like the sturdyness of IBM machines, the design and the sound the PS2's hard drives make as its accessing information (a kind of chirping sound). The reason I like IBM's is because I was still using one in my first job in the late 1990's running DOS 5.0 and Wordperfect 5.1 and wanted to own one ever since. Its taken me till 2011 to get one, needs attention but I have one.

Hi Matt, and welcome to the forums. Your interest in PS/2 is much more recent than the stuff I'm interested in, but I do have a friend who is quite the PS/2 expert, and I can understand the appeal. The closest I have is the IBM PC Convertible, which had the PS/2 styling but was released a year before the PS/2 line was announced.

I also have a PS/2 70 and also a PS/2 30-286. Yes, I find them interesting. I like the modular way they fit together and the fact that histrorically, they were an attempt to lead the PC world in a certain direction once again..expect this time no one followed!

I've also got a PS/2 (Model 56) currently running OS/2 Warp

What I really admire about IBM machines is their high standard of manufacture and design, thanks to IBM's deep research pockets at the time. It's a pity neither prospered but then history is littered with sad examples of superior technology that failed to make it in the market place

However, as retro-computing enthusiasts we are so not constrained and can now re-appreciate these fine machines on their own merits

No doubt nostalgia also plays a part. I still run WP 5.1 which I used in the workplace back in the day

Hi,

I was just looking up information on the IBM PS/1 I have. It is just the monitor and case, but think I may have keyboards and mice elsewhere that will match. This model has every bit of style and charm of the PS/2 but gains a bonus point for having a fold down flap/door on the front, putting in the same chic league as the ACT Apricot. Other than that I have a PS2/30 case with quite a lot of rust spots and more on the back of the case.

A result I just found said that only about 5000 IBM PS/1 machines were made. That doesn't sound like a lot and I wonder if the PS/2 models were manufactured in similar quantities to have their rarity status and price fetched in the US.

At the moment on auction someone is listing a Compaq Pentium 60 machine. I haven't ever seen any IBM Pentium 60 class machines on our local auction site, and it would be the first mention of one since I had a number of IBM Pentium 60s or 66s some years back before they finally got the chuck. I will consider having one IBM Pentium 60 as the stopping point in the collection along the desktop line of PCs.

Oh, if I can sneak a mention of a 486 class machine on a vintage computer site, then I have a boxed IBM PalmTop PC110, which looks like this : http://www.basterfield.com/pc110/pc110idx.htm
