Apples in Palmy

I could do with the IIGS box but not the rest of the stuff as I've got it anyway. Then there is the issue of room (or lack of it), The Apple IIGS in not really a classic computer anyway, is it? I mean, what's the attraction of a GS? Commercially they never fired and personally I think they look quite ugly. But then...they seem to be valued by Apple collectors, maybe because of the WOZ connection and the fact they represent the end of the venerable line.

I'd say take the lot, there's plenty of folk here who would love the IIgs specific accessories. That's a fairly complete setup albeit being a little yellow.

Personally the big attraction to the IIgs was what it could do beyond its other II companions. It was capable of running a GUI that most certainly could have given the Macintosh a hurry up had it been given more opportunity, could be connected to a hard disk, could use the significantly quieter 3.5" setup immediately, had a significantly better keyboard and generally felt like a stronger piece of equipment. Plus it ran everything the IIe Platinums would run, but generally a little better. Oh and the internal speaker was adjustable, so you didn't have to have your device bellowing at maximum volume.

But those are just the things I can think of from the top of my head...

I think it is a classic. It's really the first machine that shows realisation of the apple II's potential. (compared to it's subsequent 6502 based contemporaries like the C64)

The most disappointing thing about the Apple II as a series was that what needed to be done was done so late... The more esoteric hacks like the strange video layouts and the NTSC('ish) color bursts were done to make the original machine affordable, but they should have abstracted them into a hardware compatibility layer a lot sooner than they did... instead, they milked it until it turned to cheese.

Yes, only the box. I've got a disk box full of IIGS software and several manuals.

It looks like I might have to let this one go. The reserve is higher than my somewhat lukewarm desire for the machine. I'll save my pennies for the remaining unfilled items on my list (Mac 128, Sorcerer, Compucolor, Epson QX, or Jupiter Ace).

Yea, I must admit even if I did find some of those machines on my list I probably couldn't afford them.

I was contacted by a guy from Christchurch with a Jupiter Ace last year (or might have been the year before). The asking price was too much for me. I think it was eventually sold on e-bay for a rather large amount (I can't remember exactly now but 250 pounds or so comes to mind).

I've seen several Jupiter Ace come up for sale, but they sell on the 200-600 GBP range depending on completeness, testing and random chance. The Christchurch one was definitely over 200 GBP but I county recall the specifics.

I once met a bloke who said he had one at his parents' place in Cardiff. He wouldn't ask them to send it over for me though, and that was back in 1993, before they became valuable.

I bought the auction of bits and pieces that Andrew was selling. (a couple of miscellaneous memory cards etc.)

And it arrived packed in a TUI Pale Ale box...

BTW, the Taurarua district (Northern Wairarapa where Tui is located in Mangatainoka) feels part and parcel of the Manawatu. Yea right!

Yep, I'm referring to Andrew Wild, the seller of the two Apple II's this thread is about... Manawatu is where my ma's family are from. (my granddad never used to call it palmerston.. He'd always be referring to the rugby team)

I was just laughing that even packing apple II parts, beer was involved.

and yes, I'm aware that Mangatainoka is in Wairarapa, although it's still close enough to be considered a regionally local beer to Palmy, surely?

LOL. Well certainly the beer is on tap in the pubs. To tell you the truth, I don't spend enough time with tui-swilling rugby lads here to actually answer that question. I do know that those ranges, even though they are at a low point around the Manawatu gorge are still a physical barrier when it comes to regional identity.
