That does sound very familiar. At the time I never put much effort into working out what was wrong with the things; by the time I had them, I also had a Mac Plus that was the regular use machine, which had its own extremely impressive 40MB HD. Oh well, maybe I'll find another one sometime!

Thanks to Gibsaw - I now own a Apple IIe Platinum! Very happy.

Great to see his collection of Apple IIs - some great stuff there.

Now, I better figure out where to get some chips from - I'm looking for a Character ROM and IOU Chip if anyone has anything lying around Does anyone have a "scrap" platinum Apple IIe they don't want anymore? Or where is the best place to go for parts?

No, it's not silly to ask for parts on here. Someone might have a junk board they might not want. I myself have a junk board but I want to keep it for a spare source of chips in case something fails in my show units.

Be careful where you get the IOU chip from though. There is a PAL version and an NTSC (US) version. You want the PAL version even if board does say NTSC International! You want the chip numbered 344-0022 (A or B). That site might not have it.

Also Marcus, I didn't do this because I never fully engaged with that machine as a project, but I suggest opening a repair and restoration topic for it and posting screenshots of the situation. This forum doesn't host pictures, but it can deal with links to them, if you use picasa or some other picture hosting service.

Also, there are some friendly, helpful and often talented, people at the "vintage computer forums".
