Nothing tested though, if I was going to pay $850 dollars for a computer I would have a very strong expectation that the trader put the power plug in the socket and flick a switch. Its not like you have to set up an all in one computer . No mention of a boot disk?

I almost choked when i heard how expensive pack&send cost, sorry but its a non-event for me :?

Trade Me. It's either a feast or a famine!

Yes, there is some real vintage hardware there. I would have liked the seller to have flicked the switch too, given they have been dragged out and cleaned up. However, untested to me = broken so I'll treat them as such.

It will be interesting to see what these units fetch, if they are fought over and if they get bids at all.

Most of the listings say "currently" untested? Could this mean they will be before the auction's finished?

$100 for a broken Amstrad.. no thanks.. green screen.. untested.. hmmmm need one.. but likely to not work and cost a lot to send.... and $150 for 2 "untested" Amstrad Floppy drives.. might need some of those.. that's a bit pricey for me though

Don is a good bloke - I've bought a few machines off him (Apple Lisa, SV328, Spectrum etc) - I don't think he would leave you in the dark if you asked a question.

Also, his collection is not easily accessible. It's mostly in storage. Even taking the photos would have been an "unpack the storage unit" type mission.

I know he'd like to be able to say without any doubt they're working, and this is probably why it took so long for them to come for sale... but it's a fairly big collection and getting each one from storage and testing would be inconvenient and time consuming, and I suspect a decision has been reached as to whether that's realistically going to happen. :D

Indeed. I bought my Lisa Profile drive off him. I wasn't casting aspersions on Don by saying "untested=broken" above. That equation refers to the way I assess a machine when considering how much I might bid for it.

Its a lot of dosh to hand over, I dont expect 30 minutes checking it to help make a $850 sale to be to big a deal (even if they have to be transported across town to his place), there is a lot of work in earning $850, a lot more than mere plugging in and powering up an all in one computer (but switching quickly off before smoke comes out), there may be no power supply at the storage unit ?

I doubt all the monitors work (or will keep working for more than a few hours), cant just replace the monitor ! and these computers require a working boot disk.

But then the most I ever spent on Trade Me (this year) is $770 and that was a Mac Book, so its very unlikely I would spend that much on an untested 30+ year old computer, even though its great to see some "real" nice kit on Trade Me, instead of Specy,Zx81, and C64 cables and powersupplies.

That Amstrad gear is looking very tempting..... and the Sega because its an H :D

Yes, most storage lockers facilities I've seen don't provide power... However, more pertinently it's really unlikely to be 30 minutes. NOTHING is 30 minutes in Auckland unless it's at the end of your street.

I know from discussion with Don it's a good 30 minutes drive ONE WAY, from Don's house to the storage, and with a collection this big, it would take several trips and a lot of messing around. Not to mention finding the time in between job and family. God forbid doing it in traffic.

Agreed, two items are $850, but there's a lot more than just those two items. The impression I get is that Don is setting optimistic reserves to avoid a "fire sale", because there's a lot been put on at once.

Perhaps Don could test some of the higher ticket items like the Pet?
